We’re trying to drink less soda in our house to cut down on sugar, but my husband loves soda with rich foods like pizza. So I’ve been experimenting with new sparking drinks that aren’t too sweet, but stand up to real food.
I read an article about how bitters are making a comeback, so I thought I would try making a sparking bitters drink. Enter my mint orange bitters mocktail.
This drink is super easy to make. It’s just mineral water, alcohol-free orange bitters, and a splash of grenadine. Why grenadine? Because I loved Shirley Temples as a kid, and I wanted this drink to feel retro, but if you don’t like grenadine, any fruit juice will work.
The orange bitters give it an orangey flavor without the sweetness –think bitterness and aroma of an orange rind. If you don’t need any sweetness in your drink, you can stop there because the bubbles, the slight bitterness, and the orange aroma make a nice balanced drink. But if you need a touch of sweetness, I’d add the grenadine (plus it creates great colored cocktail).

I bought two bitters I’ve been playing around with. The orange bitters and the old fashion aromatic bitters. The old fashion bitters bring a cool cinnamon flavor to your drink. I personally just like a splash of it with my sparking water. You might want to give it a try. It’s fun!
