DIY Tutorial From A Catch My Party Member: How to Make a Ribbon Covered Letter or Number

Stacy H threw such a fun, colorful party for her daughter’s first birthday. Even the name of the party was cute…  Baby P’s Polka Dotty Pool Party.

Stacy made lots of the decorations herself, including this adorable ribbon covered number “1.”  (With a blog called She’s {Kinda} Crafty you’d expect nothing less.) I asked Stacy if she’d put together a tutorial on how she made it, and she so generously said yes. Hooray! Here it is…

Supplies:

  • Paper Mache letter or number
  • 6 or more coordinating scrapbook ribbons (3/8″)
  • Long length of a coordinating 1″ ribbon
  • Fast drying glue or other adhesive (I LOVE Beacon 3-in-1 Advanced Craft Glue)
  • Scissors
  • Patterned Paper & Frame (optional)

Loosely measure the length of ribbon you need to wrap around your number or letter (leave enough to wrap around to the back). Depending on your number or letter you can pre-cut your strips of ribbon.

I only pre-cut enough for the “stems” of the R and the rest I cut as I went, loosely measuring each length one at a time. Apply one line of glue at a time and lay your ribbons down in whatever pattern you’d like (or go crazy and don’t use a pattern!)

You could go ahead and glue ALL your ribbon on to your number or letter before flipping it over and gluing the ends to the back.

I stopped when I had reached a point where my pre-measured strips were all used up. Apply a bead of glue to the back edges of your number or letter and wrap the ribbon around.

You may need to hold the ribbon while the glue sets to keep everything straight.

Repeat on other side of number or letter.

Keep on going until your letter or number is completely covered.

Starting in a corner, apply a bead of glue about 1/4″ from the top edge of your number or letter (I did about 8-10 linear inches at a time since I was using fast drying glue).

Continue this around your number or letter until you’ve gotten back to the beginning, overlapping about a 1/2″ at the end. It doesn’t matter what the back looks like!

Viola! You are done!

You can also mount the number to a frame by cutting a piece of patterned paper to the size of your frame (this one is 8×10), removing the glass of your frame, insert the paper and close the frame up. Then add a whole bunch of glue to the back of your number or letter and stick it right on the patterned paper!

Don’t worry about having to buy a new frame, just take one out of your house because after your party you can just take the paper & number out & pop the glass back into your frame! (However, I did buy this frame at Target for about $4.)

Such a fun project! Thank you again, Stacy for putting this together. To learn more about Stacy and see all the crafts she makes, please check out her blog, She’s {Kinda} Crafty. Also, take a look at the rest of her pool party photos. So much cuteness!

If you make a ribbon covered letter or number for your next party, please send photos to jillian@catchmyparty.com, I’d love to post it.

DIY Tutorial from A Catch My Party Member – How to Make Minnie Mouse Party Hats

(Giveaway: Win a dozen push pops and custom labels. So easy to enter!)

How cute are these Minnie Mouse hats Maria made for her daughter’s Minnie Mouse 2nd Birthday!

Now you can make them too, with this easy tutorial Maria put together for her blog, Love & Sugar Kisses, and kindly let me repost. Thank you, Maria!

Supplies:

  • Black cardstock: one sheet per hat PLUS one sheet for every 2 sets of ears (that’s 4 ears per page)
  • Pink polka dot scrapbook paper (or whatever color/pattern you would like for the bow)
  • Coordinating ribbon
  • Double sided tape
  • Hot glue gun
  • Exacto knife
  • 3 inch round cookie cutter or 3 inch round craft punch
  • Medium sized butterfly cookie cutter (optional)

Step 1
Using your cookie cutter as a stencil or your round craft punch, cut out enough ears for your desired number of hats out of the black cardstock.

Step2
Shape a cone out of the black card stock and use double sided tape to seal the seam. You could also use hot glue for this if you want, but tape might be a little less messy. It took a few tries to figure out how to get the cardstock to roll up neatly into the cone shape.

Step 3
Cut desired number of bows out of your scrapbook paper. You can use a butterfly cookie cutter to trace the basic shape then trim them to your liking, but you can certainly freehand them!

Step 4
Cut your ribbon allowing 2 pieces for each hat. These will be your straps. You can use your child’s head to measure. Plan on about 12 inches per strap.

Step 5
Now you are ready to assemble the hats!

  • Cut 2 small slits near the top of the cone using your exacto knife. You will be inserting the ears into these slits. You want them large enough to allow the ears to be attached, but not so big that you lose too much of the rounded shape.
  • Apply a small amount of hot glue to the slit and then place each ear inside. You may need to apply a little more to get the ears to adhere. A little goes a long way and isn’t very noticeable on the hat!
  • Using the hot glue, attach the ribbon to the inside of both sides of the cone. Make sure you are careful where you place the ribbon so your ears aren’t crooked!
  • Finally, attach the bow to the front of the hat using either hot glue or double sided tape.
  • You could even jazz these up further with the birthday child and/or the guests initial on the front! Need a Mickey Mouse hat instead? Just leave off the bow and use red ribbon!

Look, it’s the perfect party hat for your little Mouseketeer!

Maria, we couldn’t agree more. Your daughter is adorable!! Thank you for the tutorial!

DIY Tutorial from A Catch My Party Member – How to Make a Toy Story Rocket Ship Pizza Tray

(Enter our personalized water bottle and clipboard giveaway. So cute for your kids!)

When I was browsing through the photos of Leslie I’s Toy Story 4th Birthday I saw this cool rocket ship pizza tray she made. I posted about it on Facebook, and a couple of people commented that they’d love to see a tutorial. Well, here it is! Thank you, Leslie, for putting this together!

My original inspiration for the rocket ship tray was the whole idea of recreating Pizza Planet and Buzz Lightyear’s space ship. Over Christmas, I’d seen Bird Craft’s tutorial for her DIY cupcake stand, and used a similar method for the centers of the rocket ship.

Supplies:

  • 3 Frito’s Cans from The Dollar Store/Tree (empty)
  • 3 Pizza Pans from the Dollar Store/Tree
  • White scrapbook paper or wrapping paper (warning 8.5 x 11 paper isn’t big enough!)
  • Duck tape in your choice of colors
  • Small metal tin filled for weight
  • Styrofoam cone (I wish I could tell you the exact size, but I accidentally left the cone on site, just make sure it’s big enough to approximately match the width of the Frito’s Cans)
  • Aluminum Flashing or other metal sheeting (I purchased a roll at Lowe’s for $11 and have tons left over!)
  • Snips for cutting flashing
  • Silver finishing nails
  • Aluminum foil-wooden skewer-leftover cardboard box

Step 1: Cut one of the Frito’s cans to half the original height.  Cover all cans with white scrapbook paper or wrapping paper.  Decorate the cans with stripes of color using Duck tape. Feel free to layer and overlap as you like.  There’s no perfect arrangement.

Step 2: Find and mark the centers of the top and bottoms of each of the pizza pans.  Glue the filled metal tin to the bottom of one tray as the base.    Alternate sandwiching the Fritos cans between the base tray and the remaining trays, saving the short can for the top of the highest tray.**Notes: It’s a pain to glue the filled tin, but the added weight is very helpful to ensure that the tray doesn’t tip over too easily.  Also be very careful to make the tins line up as closely as possible, so it really does look like the ship just flew into the pizza trays.**

Step 3: Cut the cardboard box (I used the flaps of a Pampers box) into two wings, using a pre-cut side as the side that will go against the Fritos cans.  Go ahead and cut them a little wide and high to start and just trim them down until they perfectly fit between the Fritos cans and the lip of the pizza tray.  Glue the wings in place between the lowest and middle pizza trays.

Step 4: Using snips or another metal cutting tool, cut the flashing down to a sheet that will fit over the styrofoam cone.  With help from someone else, carefully wrap the sheeting around the cone and hammer into place with small finishing nails.  Trim off any extra flashing from the bottom of the cone, and glue onto the top of the tray.**Notes: This seriously took me desperately holding everything in place while my husband hammered.  You will likely also still have several sharp edges, so make sure that all kids are supervised around the cone**

Step 5:  Wrap the wooden skewer with aluminum foil and place into the opening at the top of the styrofoam cone.  Now you have your very own rocket ship pizza tray!

Thank you, Leslie for this great tutorial.

If you make one for your own party, please send photos to jillian@catchmyparty.com. I’d love to show it off.

DIY Tutorial from A Catch My Party Member – How to Make a Ribbon Topiary

Lisa G put together this fabulous Pinkalicious-themed Pink-errific 4th Birthday for her daughter, and I loved so many of the elements she created for the party including this ribbon topiary.

I’ve seen ribbon topiaries on our main site quite a bit and have always wondered how to make one. Well, thanks to Lisa and this tutorial, I now know. Thank you, Lisa!

Supplies:

  • LOTS of ribbon!
  • Terra cotta pot or any ceramic potspray paint (for the pot)
  • Wooden dowel
  • Large styrofoam ball
  • Floral foam
  • Scissors
  • Dressmakers pins
  • Hot glue gun or gorilla glue
  • Rocks/candy/tissue paper etc for the base of the topiary

Step one: Spray paint the pot and allow it to dry

Step two: Add a dab of hot glue to one end of the wooden dowel and insert it into the styrofoam ball about 1 inch.

Step three: Add a dab of hot glue to the opposite end of the wooden dowel and insert it into the floral foam.

Step four: Once your pot is dried insert the floral foam into the pot.  This will allow your topiary to stand on a flat surface making it a little easier to decorate.

Step five: Cut cut cut that ribbon!  I cut all my ribbon in 3 inch strips and also cut multiple spools at once to save time.

Step six: Make a loop with the ribbon.  Where the ends meet insert a pin then push the pin completely into the styrofoam ball.

Step seven: Repeat step six until the entire ball is covered.

Step eight: Once the ball is covered you can add gumballs, tissue paper, rocks etc. whatever coordinates with your theme and that will cover up the floral foam in the base!

Now you have a beautiful little tree that is very easy to swap out for any season!

Thank you, Lisa, for this easy tutorial.

Check out more of Lisa’s Pink-eriffic 4th Birthday here, and see all the sweet touches she added to the party. Also, take a look at her other beautiful parties on our site and her blog Blissful Chaos.

And finally, if you make your own ribbon topiary using this tutorial, please send photos to jillian@catchmyparty.com. I’d love to show it off!
